Discovery Bank has launched a number of new features in its banking app, while also including virtual cards.

The bank said customers now get up to 20% off when they spend their Discovery Miles online and in store.

Customers can also make payments to their contacts who are members of Discovery Vitality through Discovery Pay using their mobile phone number, the bank said.

The changes are described in more detail below.

Miles of discovery

Discovery said that Vitality Money members save up to 20% more when they use their Discovery Miles on their online partner network or when they buy services like airtime, data, prepaid water and electricity.

Customers get a 5% discount for each Vitality program they have activated, plus an additional 5% for having a Discovery Bank account and credit card.

The discount is structured as follows:

  • Vitality Health = + 5% discount;
  • Vitality Drive = + 5% discount;
  • Vitality money = + 5% discount;
  • Suite Discovery Bank = + 5% discount.

The more customers interact with Vitality, the higher their Discovery Miles discounts through the Discovery Miles online retail partner network.

This network includes Takealot.com, Loot.co.za, iStore, Dial a Bed, Coricraft, NetFlorist, Yuppiechef, Zando, Dis-Chem and other stores.

Discovery Bank customers can also spend in store by generating a coupon using their Discovery Bank app.

Discovery payment

The bank said that Discovery Pay will allow customers to make payments without the need for bank details.

Payments can be made to any of your smartphone contacts who are active in the Vitality program, which has more than one million members.

“Discovery Bank customers can seamlessly send money to a Vitality customer from their banking app if they have the cell phone number saved in their contact list.

“We will then securely deposit the funds into the existing verified and linked bank account for the Vitality customer, which means there is no need to share any bank details via email or other correspondence,” said Akash Dowra, chief information officer of the client at Discovery Bank.

Virtual cards

Discovery said its virtual cards offer the same benefits as physical cards: travel insurance, purchase protection, extended warranty and rewards.

The addition means that new customers will immediately have a card to make transactions. Existing customers can easily add a virtual card in the Discovery Bank app.

Discovery Bank recommends using virtual cards for online transactions and subscriptions, and for payment platforms such as Apple, Samsung, and Netflix.

“Because it is possible to have more than one virtual card, customers can select the types of transactions for which they want to use each card,” he said.

This reduces the risk of your bank card being compromised. Customers can also add as many virtual cards as they need, at no additional cost.

“By using both a physical card and a virtual card for different transactions, our customers have the ability to increase the security of their banking transactions and protect themselves against potential fraud,” said Dowra.

This added protection comes from each virtual card having its own unique card number, expiration date and card verification value (CVV), he said.

Because a virtual card is securely stored within the Discovery Bank app, it can never be lost and is always available as long as the customer has their device with the Discovery Bank app.

“With this new capability, our customers will never be stranded without a card. It is safely stored in the Discovery Bank app.

“Also, when the card expires, it will be automatically replaced and we will make regular payments to the new card, which the administrator takes away from our customers,” said Dowra.
