Durban – Durban snake hunter Nick Evans had his hands full when he had to pull not one, but three Mozambique Spitting Cobras from a retaining wall in a Pinetown home.

A resident who was sitting in his yard called him at the Moseley Park home when one of the cobras crawled from the retaining wall.

“It was quite difficult to get them out of there. Fortunately, I had my friend Duncan Slabbert help me. We had to remove some retaining wall blocks and reach them through the small gap. “

Evans said Mozambique spit Cobras had a cytotoxic venom that was potentially fatal.

He said it caused swelling, pain and tissue damage.

“If you get urgent medical help, you must survive.”

Evans added that cobras could spray or spit their venom in lengths of 2 to 3 meters.

“The poison in the eyes is very painful. It can cause permanent damage if not rinsed.

“In case someone spits on you, your eyes should be rinsed with water immediately.

“A review with your doctor or at a clinic after rinsing is a good idea.”

He said the cobras were over a meter long. Evans said they were released in a safe area away from humans.

He said Mozambique spitting cobras were common in the Durban area “usually where there are reserves, valleys and large patches of shrubbery.”
