AfriForum, Solidaridad opens case against Malema for police ‘threats’ – The Citizen

The Afrikaner lobby group AfriForum and the Solidarity union have filed a criminal complaint against the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema.

The two organizations on Wednesday filed criminal charges against Malema for defamation, conspiracy to incite violence and assault by threats at the Lyttelton police station.

The organizations claimed that the charges against Malema were brought after more than 1,000 police officers approached Solidaridad with concerns about threatening comments the EFF leader had recently made to members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Malema said, among other things, that they [the EFF] They are not afraid of the police and will fight with members of the police and their families in their own homes. Malema says that the EFF will confront the police officers ‘one by one’ in their comfort zones and teach them that no one will be able to defeat the power of the masses.

“It is clear that Malema still believes that he is above the law. The reason Malema makes these statements in the first place is that to date there have been no consequences for all previous incidents in which he openly incited violence. If the police do not take this matter seriously enough, Malema will see it as confirmation that he is above the law, ”said Ernst Roets, head of policy and action at AfriForum.

Renate Barnard of Solidarity said: “Solidarity was overwhelmed by members of the police from across the country who expressed shock, disgust and outright outrage at Malema’s words and threats. It is unacceptable that a political leader who has sworn to respect the Constitution and other laws of the country, is behaving so violently with the police ”.

AfriForum said that if the National Prosecutor’s Office did not pursue the matter, its private prosecution unit would prosecute Malema.
