CAPE TOWN – Finance Minister Tito Mboweni announced on Tuesday a 500 million rand investment in the vaccine consortium that seeks to produce a vaccine against COVID-19.

The pandemic and associated lockdowns have left South Africa’s economy in shambles.

Speaking during a Bloomberg webinar on Tuesday, Mboweni said he was concerned about the effect of a second spike on the economy, but was confident the nation was in a good position to benefit from a successful vaccine.

“The decision has already been made that South Africa is paying 500 million rand to participate in the vaccine production process so that we can be on the front line of who can receive the vaccine. The health minister is very happy with this ”.
