The government is set to update the Tier 1 travel rules for South Africa, easing the requirements for people planning to fly domestically during the holiday period.
A spokesperson for the South African Airports Company (ACSA) confirmed the changes, while state-owned national airline Mango released a statement outlining some of the changes.
The revised rules will cause health screenings at domestic ports to stop nationwide from midnight on November 24, 2020 for domestic travel purposes.
“We have also been informed in this regard, that therefore no health questionnaires will be required as of November 25, 2020 for domestic travelers only,” Mango said.
ACSA will continue with the temperature controls for entry to the airport and will only allow entry to those who have the corresponding documentation for the flight. However, travel permits will no longer be required for all trips, Mango said.
Other requirements that stay in place include:
- The use of a mask is mandatory at the airport and for travel;
- Social distancing within the airport terminals will continue to be necessary;
- Guests are encouraged to maintain general hand hygiene and disinfect frequently.
Please note that the health screening will stop starting at midnight on November 24, 2020.
In addition, the health questionnaires will not be necessary from November 25, 2020 only for domestic travelers.

“Due to the additional security and regulatory protocols required, we encourage our guests to plan extra time for their flight trips,” Mango said. “Please arrive at least two and a half hours before your flight as a contingency for unforeseen delays.”
“These are extraordinary times that require extraordinary measures never before implemented. We call on all South Africans to comply with lockdown regulations, wear masks at all times, maintain good hygiene and social distancing, and more than ever, continue to use all our digital platforms (web, mobi-app, email , etc.) including our call center “.
The revised regulations come when national airlines open for reservations before the holiday period.
Mango, Kulula, FlySafair, Airlink and the recently launched airline Lift have reopened for domestic flights, with other brands such as British Airways making a comeback as well.
