Cape Town – Two men have described the terrifying details of the Cape Town taxi cab shooting in which six men and a woman in a wheelchair were injured.
Speaking from the scene, Feston Nankhuwa, who has a clothing and accessories stall nearby, said he was nervous about continuing to trade.
“I heard the shots and I lay down on the ground because I was scared… I didn’t see anything, I didn’t know what was happening. I have been selling here for two years. I don’t know if I’ll come tomorrow, I’m thinking of going now, I don’t know if they’ll come back or what, “he said.
The bullet holes went through two cars that were parked nearby and a driver, who is a taxi driver, said he was sitting in the car when the bullet hit his Avanza.
“At first I thought they were rubber bullets, then I saw people fall on the steps and that’s when I knew it was serious. I lay in the car and stayed in the car until the police arrived. “
Another frantic driver, who said he was parked in the area because he was visiting a friend, said he was waiting for the police to remove the bullet from him.
Police spokesman Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said traffic officers managed to arrest a 31-year-old suspect and seize a firearm.
“Detectives and crime experts are searching three scenes on Marine Drive and Strand and Buitenkant streets in Cape Town for clues following a shooting that left six men and one woman injured.
“According to the information, unidentified suspects shot and injured people on the station deck before fleeing in various directions while continuing to fire.
“Traffic officers detained a 31-year-old suspect and confiscated a firearm. Cases of attempted murder are being investigated. The suspect will appear in court once he has been charged. The possibility that the incident is related to the taxi industry is not ruled out, ”said Rwexana.
In a statement Monday, JP Smith, a Mayco member for safety and security, said that the station platform and surrounding area and roads had been temporarily closed after the incident.
Smith praised the traffic officer who caught the alleged gunman while on patrol.
“His bravery has ensured that there will be justice for those shot. Our thoughts are with them and their families, ”he said.
