Gauteng police arrested a man linked to a botched cash-in-transit robbery in Dobsonville, Soweto, on Monday morning.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Brenda Muridili said the arrest came after a “72-hour activation plan” was implemented to mobilize resources after two thefts of cash in transit in Gauteng on Monday morning.

According to Muridili, unknown suspects fired on a security van around 9 a.m.

“The security officers retaliated. A police vehicle in the vicinity suffered bullet holes but no member was injured, while a community member, a woman in her twenties, suffered a gunshot wound to her hand during the crossfire and was taken to hospital. No money was taken, ”he said.

During the arrest, the police recovered six rifles and ammunition, as well as three vehicles. Muridili said the suspect will appear in court soon.

In another incident, Muridili said police responded to a CIT robbery that occurred in Westonaria around 11 a.m.

“A security officer had just collected cash from a store when an unknown suspect shot him, took the money from the security officer and fled the scene on foot,” he said.

Muridili said police recovered a pistol with ammunition and a vehicle with a rifle with ammunition inside a few meters from the crime scene.

She said that cash thefts in transit are a priority for police and that police managers are aligning plans to curb this crime with the “safer holiday season operations” being implemented nationwide.
