Cape Town – The eight EFF members, who were arrested on Friday during a chaotic protest in Brackenfell, were released on warning and will return to court in February.

The EFF came to Brackenfell, where they were protesting alleged racism at Brackenfell High School after reports of a white-only matrix masquerade ball last month.

The atmosphere was tense on Friday morning, prompting police to fire tear gas, stun grenades and use a water cannon.

Eight EFF members, who were arrested, appeared in court Monday morning at Blue Downs Magistrates Court, said National Tax Authority (NPA) spokesman Eric Ntabazalila.

“They were accused of public violence. They were released on warning and will return to court on February 12. The case was postponed for further investigation. “

Meanwhile, outside court, the EFF met to show its support for the accused.

EFF regional secretary Banzi Dambuza said: “It will be seen in court that these are the fighters who were walking back to the buses, and they were actually shooting at them, and when they were arrested, they had no weapons. They weren’t doing anything and they just arrested them. “

EFF provincial president Melikhaya Xego said his aim was to claim that the party was opposed to racism.

He said the party still had unfinished business with Brackenfell and the high school, including the issue of a missing beret.

“The high school itself, we have not yet delivered our memo. We still haven’t received the red beret that was taken from us.

“We will never finish our mission with Brackenfell until we get our beret and also deliver the memorandum of claims we have against the school.

In a statement released on Sunday, the EFF asked the man who allegedly took a beret to return it, saying he would embark on a door-to-door campaign if he didn’t.

“We further reiterate the call for the terrorist to return the EFF beret, or the EFF will carry out a door-to-door campaign in Brackenfell to regain our symbolic mark of resistance,” the party said.

Brackenfell Borough Councilman Rhynhardt Bresler said he didn’t think the beret was on Brackenfell.

The EFF demanded that Brackenfell High School impose punishment on “racist” staff and members of the school’s governing body within seven days.
