Cape Town – Traffic officers detained a suspect and seized a firearm after seven people were wounded by gunshots Monday in an alleged war between taxi drivers.
Police spokesman Noloyiso Rwexana said crime experts and detectives were combing three scenes, on Old Marine Drive, Strand and Buitenkant streets, looking for clues after a shooting that left six men and one woman injured. .
Rwexana said unidentified suspects shot and wounded people on the deck of the Cape Town taxi station before fleeing in various directions while continuing to shoot.
“Cases of attempted murder are being investigated. The suspect will appear in court once he has been charged. The possibility that the incident is related to the taxi industry is not ruled out, “he said.
Forensic pathology and emergency medical services spokeswoman Deanna Bessick said the Western Cape government emergency medical services (EMS) responded to a shooting involving seven taxi drivers at 12 p.m.
Bessick said the patients were found on Old Marine Drive, the long-distance bus terminals and on the platform of the taxi rank.
“The emergency medical services transported four patients to nearby hospitals. The rest of the patients were transported by ER24. The patients suffered injuries to the chest, shoulder and head. Fortunately, there were no fatalities at the scene,” he said .
Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith praised the traffic officer for his lightning response in pursuing and detaining the suspect who was armed with a 9mm firearm. “He didn’t think twice about running over a gunman to make sure no one else was hurt and the criminal was caught.”
Smith said the officer’s bravery had ensured that there was justice for those who were shot.
