Six men and a woman in a wheelchair were injured when unknown suspects opened fire at the Cape Town taxi rank on Monday.

The multiple shootings are alleged to have occurred around 12:00, and shots were heard from three different locations.

Police spokesman Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said crime scene experts and detectives were combing three scenes, on Marine Drive, as well as Strand and Buitenkant streets, looking for clues.

“According to the information, unidentified suspects shot and wounded people on the deck of the station before fleeing in various directions while continuing to fire.”

A traffic officer patrolling the area arrested a 31-year-old suspect and seized a 9mm firearm.

Member of the safety committee and protection of the city of Cape Town, JP Smith, praised the official response to the arrest the suspect.

“Their bravery has ensured that there will be justice for those who were shot. Our thoughts are with them and their families,” Smith said.

The shootings are allegedly related to a taxi dispute between drivers operating from the line.

The police have opened attempted murder cases for investigation.

Rwexana said the suspect will appear in court once he has been charged.

“The possibility that the incident is related to the taxi industry is not ruled out,” he added.
