On Monday, Woolworths revealed that it has plans to take over Checkers’ successful Sixty60 delivery service.

In a tweet, the company teased a new service called Woolies Dash, which promises to deliver the chain’s food “fast and fresh” within an hour of placing the order.

Checkers have been eating their competitors’ lunch with their 60-minute grocery delivery service called Sixty60.

Launched a year ago, the application allows users to buy more than 7,000 products from their smartphone and receive their groceries in an hour.

While shopping for groceries online from Woolworths and Pick n Pay involves reserving delivery spaces well in advance, Checkers capitalized on the large market for urgent last-minute purchases. The Sixty60 service has created more than 1,200 jobs.

In its latest results, Shoprite Group reported that the number of orders in Sixty60 has skyrocketed during the lockdown:

Woolworths’ plans to launch a competing service will launch the latest salvo in its battle with Checkers, which seeks to gain market share away from the luxury retailer.

Checkers recently launched an ad campaign criticizing Woolworths’ plans to keep prices lower.
