More than five months after its South African operator, Comair, entered the corporate bailout, British Airways’ domestic flight bookings were reopened.
Comair, 77, was forced to carry out a corporate bailout as he struggled with more than R5 billion in debt, along with the fallout from the travel ban during the early stages of SA’s shutdown. Under an agreement with its business rescue professionals, a consortium of former executives and board members will inject R500 million into the company, in exchange for a controlling stake. Of the 27 aircraft above, the company will initially operate a reduced service of 15 aircraft.
Comair plans to start operating all previous British Airways domestic routes from December 9. Regional services will be reintroduced as it accelerates to full operations in the coming months.
Comair’s airline kulula.com is also accepting reservations and will begin flying on December 1.
Comair has operated British Airways flights in South Africa since it signed a franchise agreement in 1996 and, according to the company, it has been the most successful franchise of the British airline. “The continued support of British Airways is a great vote of confidence in the future of Comair,” says Glenn Orsmond, who represents the new owners, Comair Rescue Consortium.
The new British Airways tickets are very competitively priced.
A flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town on December 16 will cost just R862 on British Airways, while tickets available on kulula.com start at R1,756. On Flysafair, same day flights will cost from R1,322 and on Mango, tickets start at R1,500.
Only the newcomer, Lift, can beat British Airways in price – it still had a couple of flights available under R800.
Comair will now also begin opening its SLOW rooms at King Shaka International, Cape Town International and OR Tambo International. The other lounges will reopen as flight hours expand, the company said.
Discovery Vitality has also resumed its agreement with kulula.com as well as the agreement for FNB’s eBucks rewards program with Comair.
