FNB is rolling out its secure online authentication service to all individual merchants and customers to provide an additional layer of security for digital transactions ahead of Black Friday.

Online Secure, widely known as 3D Secure, is the process of authenticating a cardholder during an e-commerce transaction.

In line with industry requirements, FNB says it has upgraded all merchants and cardholders to secure online authentication to ensure an improved user experience, security, and flexibility.

Indeed FNB clients now they will have to authenticate when making purchases online, the bank said.

“Customers previously received a Unique Pin (OTP) by SMS or email when they made an online purchase. As of November 10, all customers now receive an automatic notification on their phone in their verified FNB application to authenticate the purchase, ”said the bank.

“If the customer does not have the FNB application or does not respond to the FNB application push message to approve their online purchase, they will receive the OTP via SMS, in-app messaging and by logging into online banking messaging.”

The receipt of an OTP by email will be interrupted by security measures.

When FNB is satisfied that the online purchase is secure, customers will not be required to approve their purchase. This will result in fast and secure authentication, especially during peak periods like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, said Chris Labuschagne, CEO of FNB Card.

Additionally, the bank now allows customers to update their secure contact details online through the FNB app. The online security upgrade through online banking and call center will also be discontinued, he said.

“We encourage customers to opt for convenient and safer ways to shop during Black Friday in accordance with the Covid-19 security guidelines. More importantly, many local retailers have started offering Black Friday specials much earlier than usual to enhance the shopping experience for consumers.

“We also encourage customers to use trusted platforms when shopping online and remind everyone to always keep information such as PINs and passwords safe and to only authenticate transactions they have initiated.
