Floods wreak havoc in Tshwane – The Citizen

Floods due to heavy rains in the past two days have caused damage to infrastructure, homes, roads and cars.

Although no deaths or injuries were reported, there were major traffic jams, flooded roads and bridges, towed vehicles, uprooted trees and flooded houses.

The South African Meteorological Service (SAWS) had issued a thunderstorm warning in Gauteng on Friday afternoon.

SAWS confirmed that scattered rains would occur in the southern regions of Gauteng, namely Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark and their surroundings.

Trees had to be cut and removed in Arcadia, Lyttelton Manor, Villeria and Sunnyside, as well as in Centurion.

Low bridges suffered localized flooding, and firefighters worked hard to clear debris in Capital.

At least four cars were stuck in the water, and the occupants managed to get to safety.

A house in Anlin was reportedly flooded with knee-high water when authorities arrived. Part of the roof also collapsed.

Five houses were flooded in Hammanskraal, prompting emergency services to activate roads and stormwater equipment.

Parts of Mamelodi were also flooded, causing traffic congestion. And the water rose dangerously fast around the Centurion lake and hotel.

Drivers are urged to avoid crossing low bridges during rainy weather and, if possible, to avoid driving in heavy rain. If this is not possible, find a safe place to park and wait for the rain to subside.

Residents in Rooiwal, Hammanskraal, and Moretele Municipality are urged to remain vigilant, as water levels continue to rise significantly.

Hail and severe weather were also observed at Vereeniging.

The roof of a Global gas station collapsed due to a severe storm that hit Sharpeville on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services and disaster management teams are still on high alert, and rainy weather is expected to continue through the weekend and Monday.
