Manchester United are facing a goalkeeping crisis in January and it is entirely their own creation.
The flagrant club mismanagement of Dean Henderson and Sergio Romero has left both players unhappy at the club and their careers stuck in the mud.
Relations between Romero and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were completely severed when he was eliminated for the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the Europa League. It was then decided not to return Henderson on loan and make him David de Gea’s number two, leaving the Argentine, who was not even informed of the decision, out in the cold.
Club executives then blocked a deadline loan deal for Everton, leading to the point where Romero’s wife, Eliana Guercio, took to Instagram to beg United to let him leave.
The club did not agree to the request and did not even register Romero on the Premier League or Champions League rosters, again without bothering to inform the player of their decision.
The rejected loan move to Goodison, in which the Toffees reportedly paid 100% of his salary and offered a £ 2 million fee, was rejected because United wanted to sell and had put a starting price of £ 8 million on the head of Rosemary.
But now according to Mirror, United’s board is set to lower its asking price to £ 2.5 million to move Romero in January. This would see them recovering less than they would have if they had agreed to the Everton deal and avoided unnecessary stagnation of the 33-year-old’s career, which includes 96 games for Argentina.
Meanwhile, Henderson hasn’t been given the playing time that Romero used to enjoy at Old Trafford and that he presumably would have expected when he was brought in on loan.
The 23-year-old has appeared in just two Carabao Cup matches and the Champions League clash with Istanbul Basaksehir, with De Gea preferred for PSG and RB Leipzig matches and all Premier League matches.
This has given Henderson little opportunity to claim the number one spot or to play football regularly enough to challenge Jordan Pickford for the number one spot in England.
Sun He claims that the player is unhappy with the situation and has demanded that the club send him on loan in January.
“Bournemouth, a top player in the championship, are already exploring a loan for Henderson, but would rather play in the Premier League,” reports The Sun.
“Leeds and Brighton may consider a loan deal in January, but United will have the last word.
“And that could lead to awkward conversations between Solskjaer and the Henderson camp for weeks to come.”
In fact, the Championship or a move abroad seems far more likely than a move from the Premier League and would represent a huge and unnecessary step backwards for Henderson at this stage in his career.
The unhappiness of both goalkeepers creates a dangerous situation for Solskjaer, who will have to disappoint one in January or risk completing the season with just De Gea and fourth-choice stopper Lee Grant.
There seems to have been no advance planning at all, coupled with incompetence in handling Romero’s departure and this is yet another example of the chaotic and inhumane way this great club is now running.
