JOHANNESBURG – City of Tshwane Roads and Transportation MMC Dikeledi Selowa visited the families of three children who drowned in a stormwater trench.
Children between the ages of 10 and 9 were discovered by community members on Saturday in Hammanskraal amid heavy rains and high winds.
Preliminary investigations show that the children were playing in the trench after heavy rains opened their barriers.
The metro has summoned the contractors responsible for the construction.
Selowa said the visit was to offer support to the families.
“We went to visit families and it was to establish the way forward as a city and to see if there was negligence on the part of the developers.”

At the same time, three children drowned in the Olifantsriver River near Lutzville in the Western Cape.
The children who are the children of agricultural workers were 11, 10 and 7 years old. Two of the children are from the same family.
Their bodies were found on Saturday.
Billy Claasen of the Farm and Rural Workers Development Organization said this incident raises a deeper problem of lack of facilities in farming communities.
“We send our condolences to the families.”
