The district attorney has asked Home Affairs Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi to re-account to parliament on the escape of fugitives Shepherd and Mary Bushiri after failing to provide “real” answers during their previous appearance. .
Angel Khanyile, the party’s shadow interior minister, made the call Sunday after allegations of a massive money laundering scheme.
The couple conducted more than 20,000 bank transactions from their business and personal accounts in a month in an apparent effort to move their assets out of the country, City Press reported Sunday.
This was when the couple fled the country to their home in Malawi less than a week after their release on bail.
The party said it had written to the chairman of the parliamentary home affairs committee, Adv Bongani Bongo, requesting a joint meeting with the home affairs, international relations, justice and police portfolio committees to allow the respective departments to provide comments on Progress. the government has caused the couple to be extradited.
“The key government departments involved in the extradition and given the messy way in which they have handled this case before, be it the immigration status of the Bushiri or the enforcement of their bail status, no stone can be left unturned to ensure that the processes are followed, ”said the party.
The government has confirmed that extradition proceedings have been initiated against the Bushiris after they have jumped the country undetected.
“It is important that the relevant departments inform the parliament to satisfy the public that the process is progressing smoothly,” the DA said.
The party said it had also requested that Motsoaledi provide the committee with CCTV footage of Waterkloof Air Force Base from the hours before the SA Bushiris disappeared.
“We think this will play an important part of the investigation.”
Motsoaledi during his first appearance before the committee last week revealed that the couple had multiple passports and blamed the country’s porous borders.
“I must emphasize that Mr. Bushiri has five passports. None of them are South African. All were issued in Malawi. We have their passport numbers. Mrs. Bushiri also has five passports …
“It is a common cause that we are suffering from porous borders in this country. We believe that people at risk of flight can cross any of our porous borders, “he said.
The district attorney said his explanation was not adequate.
“The minister did not shed any real light on the events related to the Bushiri escape. Hopefully he will be able to give real answers if he gets another chance to appear, ”added Khanyile.
