Five trucks caught fire Saturday night while driving between Parys and Sasolburg.
- Five trucks caught fire between Parys and Sasolburg on Saturday night.
- The drivers fled to a nearby field after men with gasoline bombs and guns forced them to stop, according to police.
- The incident follows a similar one near Heidelberg on Thursday in which nine trucks were set on fire.
Five trucks caught fire on the R59, between Parys and Sasolburg, just before 9:00 p.m. on Saturday.
By the time police arrived, Sasolburg firefighters had already put out the blaze.
According to the police spokesman, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the trucks were forced to stop after a gasoline bomb was thrown at one.
“It was also indicated that shots were fired
[at] other trucks, forcing them to stop, “he added.
“The drivers fled to the nearby field and then set fire to four other trucks.”
The motive for the attack is being investigated and no arrests have been made.
The truckers were treated for shock at Parys District Hospital.

On Thursday, nine trucks with trailers were set on fire in Heidelberg.
Police spokeswoman Captain Mavela Masondo previously told News24 that preliminary investigations revealed that a white Toyota Quantum and a black VW vehicle, both with unknown registration numbers, had blocked major roads around 8 p.m. Thursday: 30.
Gasoline bombs were subsequently thrown at the trucks and seven caught fire on the N3.
Two other trucks were set on fire on R103.
The reason is still unknown.
