Bruno fernandes He says United manchester he has the quality to do “much better” after his two-time penalty knocked out lowly West Brom 1-0 to end a six-game streak without a Premier League win at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese midfielder got a second chance after Sam Johnstone saved his first penalty shot, but went off his line in doing so.

United also had a break at the other end moments earlier when a Fernandes foul penalty on Conor Gallagher was disallowed after a VAR review.

“It was very important to win the match first, not because it is the first win at Old Trafford, but because we need the points,” Fernandes told BT Sport.

“We can do much better, we have the qualities to do much better.”

Similar to United’s Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain last month, Fernandes made the most of his reprieve by seeing his first shot from point of view stopped after the goalkeeper stepped out of his line.

But he was still frustrated about missing a third penalty this season, though two were repeated again, after a perfect record with his first 10 for United.

“Ok I scored the second but I need to score the first,” added Fernandes.

The victory places Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in ninth place and seven points for Tottenham, who set the pace, with one game less.

However, there was little to allay concerns about where the Red Devils are headed with Solskjaer, as West Brom threatened to score their first league win since returning to the top flight.

‘Little West Brom’

West Brom has now scored just once in their last six games, but Slaven Bilic was furious at the game-changing decision not to award his team a penalty early in the second half.

Fernandes appeared to have trapped Gallagher inside the box when referee David Coote signaled the spot.

But he angered Bilic by overturning the decision after reviewing the incident on the court monitor.

“Throughout the second half I felt like a little West Brom. All those crucial decisions were against us,” said the Croatian.

“The penalty against Gallagher is a clear penalty. The other penalty, with the new rules, is handball. But before handball it was a clear foul on Gallagher.

“Instead of 1-0 for us, it’s 1-0 for them. It’s a huge difference.”

Even Solskjaer admitted that he thought the Baggies penalty should have been kept.

“There is contact between the ball and the man. In my head it could be a penalty, but maybe the rules are different from how I interpret them,” Solskjaer added.

Moments later Gallagher refused again, this time because of David de Gea’s legs with the best chance of the game up to that point.

However, it was United who had a chance to win the game from the spot when Juan Mata’s cross struck Darnell Furlong’s arm and this time Coote’s decision to award a penalty was not overturned.

In the second round, Fernandes scored the penalty, but United still had to use their luck to hold on to all three points.

Callum Robinson was inches from a tie when his shot from outside the box returned to the crossbar.

The loss leaves the Baggies still rooted in the relegation zone with just three points from their first eight games.
