Diogo Jota aimed to leave Liverpool and “go higher” for a former teammate

Liverpool’s new player Diogo Jota has been backed up to leave Anfield and ‘go higher’ after a brilliant start to his Merseyside career.

The Premier League champion surprised many when they spent £ 41 million on the Portuguese attacker in the summer, but after just two months he has proven to be money well spent.

In 11 appearances this season, Jota has scored seven goals, including a hat-trick in the Champions League win over Atalanta.

But Jota’s biggest impact has been forcing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to modify his usual 4-3-3 formation to accommodate him alongside Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Jota signed a five-year contract in September, but his former Pacos de Ferreira teammate Stephen Eustaquio believes the 23-year-old will not stay at Liverpool.

He told the Spanish media La Vanguardia: “Jota was in Pacos, Atlético de Madrid, Porto, Liverpool. He works a lot.

“He is a very hard-working person, very delicate with the ball; play a lot.

“I shared a dressing room with him, he was captain of the Portugal Under-21 team.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool are set to receive Fabinho from injury to ease their defensive crisis against Leicester on Sunday.

The Brazilian missed Liverpool’s last three games with a hamstring injury, but has resumed training and is in contention to start alongside Joel Matip in central defense.

Captain Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all out.
