According to Sony CEO Jim Ryan in a recent interview, PlayStation 5 players will soon have access to a service that can compete with Xbox Game Pass.
PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has proclaimed that there is “news to come” regarding a Playstation 5 similar service to Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft was the company that finally hit gold with the Netflix for games concept, offering more than 100 titles to subscribers for a low monthly fee. This includes overlooked indie games, blockbuster titles with sequels on the horizon, and the vast majority of Microsoft’s own contributions. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers also receive EA’s similar subscription service on Xbox, as well as various benefits for free to play games and occasional bonus downloads of downloadable content. The service has even offered free months of Postmates and Disney + in 2020.

Recently, in September of this year, Ryan spoke out against the Game Pass model, calling it unsustainable and telling Gamasutra that Sony would not “go down the road of putting new titles on a subscription model.” For that same reason, Sony released the PlayStation 5 with the “PlayStation Plus Collection”, which bolstered the library of PlayStation 5 owners with 18 of the most important titles from the previous console if they were subscribed to PlayStation Plus. Ryan has also fought Xbox’s strategy by stating that Sony “believes in generations,” a statement that was used against him following the revelation that several PlayStation 5 launch titles were also coming to PlayStation 4.
In a recent interview with TASS, Jim Ryan confirmed that despite his previous statements, Sony will not allow Xbox Game Pass to function unopposed in the world of subscription services. While Ryan offers PlayStation Now as the company’s current subscription service, he says there is “news to come” regarding a larger competitor to Microsoft’s Game Pass. It is not known if this service would be exclusive to PlayStation 5 or go back to PlayStation 4 players, but previous statements indicate that it would not cover the latest and greatest from Sony studios in a similar way to Xbox Game Pass.
Elsewhere in the interview, Ryan states that PlayStation 4 will continue to be important to PlayStation’s strategy throughout 2022. Many PlayStation 5 launch titles have a cross-generation approach, and the same was revealed for the next West horizon forbidden in 2021. Sony Studio Insomniac Games has confirmed that its next game Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart It would be just PlayStation 5, but the question remains when the company will go all out for its new hardware and if that would affect any Game Pass competitors on the horizon.
While Jim Ryan’s messages about him Playstation 5 It has been somewhat uneven, it is good for everyone that Sony is considering competing with Microsoft with some kind of Game Pass service. All indications are that Xbox Game Pass is nothing more than a boon to independent developers and smaller publishers, gaining notoriety for games that might otherwise have been lost in the confusion. While Sony’s offering is likely to end up being very different from Microsoft’s, that will also mean that everyone will have an idea of what works and what doesn’t in this relatively new space for the games industry.
