Johannesburg – National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole launched a 72-hour activation plan after a cash robbery at the Fidelity Guard base in Gauteng on Saturday morning.

The robbery took place at the guard base in Hermanstad, Hercules, when a group of armed people, dressed in Fidelity uniforms and ski masks, broke into the premises and targeted the security guards at gunpoint.

Some employees were assaulted before an undisclosed sum of money was stolen from them.

Police spokesman Brigadier Vish Naidoo said criminal intelligence, forensic experts and the Hawks were part of the activation plan and were currently combing the scene.

“Members of Fidelity Group’s senior management are also on the scene assisting detectives as they also try to determine the extent of the loss incurred.

“We call on anyone with information about this theft to contact SAPS at our Crime Stop number 086 00 10111. The information can also be channeled through SAPS MySAPSApp, an application that can be downloaded anywhere Android or iPhone via the Play Store, ”said Naidoo, who said the information would be kept confidential.

In a circulating WhatsApp message that was allegedly sent by an officer at the scene, he said the value of the stolen money was about 30 million rand.

The officer said that the Fidelity guards were not armed, no shots were fired and no bodies were injured in the ordeal.
