- Bongankosi Madikizela was elected head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Western Cape.
- Votes cast from home in a virtual conference also elected Albert Fritz as deputy leader.
- Madikizela called for party unity before next year’s elections.
Bonginkosi Madikizela was elected the DA leader in the Western Cape at a virtual conference held on Saturday.
Madikizela is also the MEC for transport and public works in the provincial legislature.
The allegations of an assassination plot made against him emerged days before the party’s provincial elections, but were rejected as false by the president of the party’s Federal Council, Helen Zille.
Albert Fritz was elected vice president. Fritz is the MMC for community security in the province which has a DA majority.
Other positions were:
Provincial President: Jaco Londt.
Provincial Vice Presidents: Jean-Pierre Smith, Grant Twigg and Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Provincial Finance President: Erik Marais.
Additional members: Peter Helfrich, Carl Pophaim, Zimkitha Sulelo, and Lorraine Botha.
In a speech distributed to the media, Madikizela called for party unity after a difficult period.
“We have to come together as a party if we are serious about saving South Africa, and if we are serious about the government of the Western Cape, and if we want to ensure that by 2021 we will rule all municipalities in the Western Cape.” “
“We need a stable party,” Madikizela said after a tense few years for the DA that saw the exodus of its leader, Mmusi Maimane.
He added that for a long time the game had been internally focused and some things were “very unpleasant”.
The focus should now be on making the party attractive to the people of the Western Cape, Madikizela said.

Madikizela urged party members to be united before the elections, congratulated his colleagues, and said that those who did not succeed in the party’s internal elections would play an integral role in making it back in government.
The province’s ANC congratulated him, but said he should “get rid of the [Helen] Zille cabal and do the right thing. ”
“As ANC, we will support all genuine efforts to address inequality, unemployment and poverty in the province.”
