More than 100 students from Walter Sisulu University (WSU) they were abruptly canceled in the middle of the year.

According to the students, they were all in the faculty of science, engineering and technology, they enrolled for the 2020 academic year in February, but to their surprise, months later the university said their enrollment was “illegal.”

In May, the students were withdrawn from the academic system and cannot write their final exams.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved students, Zintle Sali, who is studying analytical chemistry, said that a list of “academically excluded” students was released in March, “and the students on that list wrote letters of appeal.”

“On May 10, we received an email saying that we had been illegally registered at the institution.

“Four days later, we were discharged.

“The day they dropped us, they showed us another list that had the names of students who they didn’t know had been excluded academically,” Sali said.

A query sent to the university’s spokeswoman, Yonela Tukwayo, received no response by Thursday’s print deadline.
