Previously, the protesters approached the school gates and were determined to hand over a memorandum on school management, but the police blocked them. The memorandum refers to several complaints of racism.
“We are not going anywhere; we are looking for them. This is our town, these are our streets [and] this is our province, ”said EFF Secretary General Marshall Dlamini.
Right after Dlamini’s speech, the police once again confronted the protesters.
Members of the EFF attacked a man who approached the stage where the party leaders were speaking. This led to chaos, with police firing stun grenades and tear gas, ending the demonstration.
It was not clear what action had been or would be taken after the attack on a man by party members.
Public order police were expected to maintain their presence in the area until calm was restored.
