Johannesburg – With heavy rain and hail hitting parts of southern Gauteng, taxi passengers and others escaped serious injuries Friday afternoon after the roof of a gas station collapsed onto three vehicles in Vereeniging.

The incident occurred around 1:50 p.m. on Seeiso Road in Sharpville, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said in a statement. Fortunately, only two men in their twenties suffered minor injuries.

At approximately 1:50 p.m., ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the roof of a gas station had collapsed onto a small bus, a taxi and a light motor vehicle. Drivers and passengers had taken refuge in the nearby store, ” Meiring said.

Doctors evaluated the patients and found that two men, believed to be in their twenties, had only suffered minor injuries. Fortunately, no serious injuries or deaths were found.

” The patients were treated and then transferred to Kopanong Provincial Hospital for additional care.

” Heavy rains and hail are believed to have played a contributing factor in causing the collapse. Local authorities were on the scene to carry out further investigations. “

There were also reports of flooding at the Midvaal Hospital in Three Rivers and a shopping mall, with multiple reports of underwater areas in parts of southern Gauteng.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) issued a thunderstorm warning yesterday in Gauteng on Friday afternoon.

The SAWS said scattered showers of thunder would occur in the southern regions of Gauteng, namely Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark and surrounding areas.

The weather can linger for the rest of the weekend.

The Northwest, Free State, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal are also likely to experience thunder showers, SAWS said.

He also warned that thunderstorms could bring the possibility of localized flooding in low-lying areas and the risk of damage to cars on the roads as well as critical infrastructure.
