President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Tsakani Maluleke as the Auditor General of South Africa for a non-renewable period of seven years starting on December 1, 2020.

The auditor general reviews the government’s strategic objectives, programs and initiatives and responds to the risks identified in his or her audit work.

Their role has become increasingly prominent in South Africa as the government has been held to account for years of corruption and waste.

Maluleke succeeds Kimi Makwetu, who passed away due to illness on November 11, 2020, a few weeks before the expiration of her term. She has served as Deputy Auditor General since 2014.

Maluleke is a Chartered Accountant and Registered Auditor who holds a B Comm degree (accounting) and a postgraduate diploma in accounting from the University of Cape Town.

He also obtained a postgraduate diploma in Public Development and Management from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2016.

In addition to his role as Deputy Auditor General, Maluleke served on the BEE Presidential Advisory Council, where he led a subcommittee that developed recommendations that influenced key amendments to legislation and regulations related to the economic empowerment of broad-based Blacks.

“Ms. Maluleke has more than 20 years of experience in the public and private sectors, covering various areas including Auditing, Consulting, Corporate Advisory, Development Financing, Investment Management and Capacity Development Agencies,” said the presidency at a statement.

“Since 2014 she has served as Deputy Auditor General and Executive Director of the Office of the Auditor General of South Africa.
