JOHANNESBURG – Lack of political will is blamed for the growing list of problems at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
The public broadcaster announced early Friday morning that its board had suspended the downsizing process for seven days.
He said this was to allow stakeholders to explore more options to ensure the financial sustainability of the corporation.
Earlier this week, workers refused to accept firing letters that were sent to some 400 staff members.
This week lunchtime pickets have been held at SABC offices across the country, and workers have asked management to resign.
Former acting SABC board member John Mattison said the government took too long to address the underlying issues at the corporation.
“That is where we are now, politicians tell them that they cannot handle things the way they want and, on the other hand, they are not giving them the resources. So that’s catch-22, it’s a political problem. “
Meanwhile, the Communication Workers Union said it has continued its strike at SABC offices nationwide since noon on Friday.
