A 41-year-old woman is finally enjoying life since a 132-pound benign mucinous ovarian tumor was removed from her abdomen.
According to Western Connecticut Health Network, the woman (who chooses to remain anonymous) first noticed something was wrong late last year.
Alarmed by the sudden and rapid weight gain in her abdomen, she was growing about 10 pounds (more than 4 kg) each week, she made an appointment with her gynecologist, who identified her tumor with a CT scan. She was referred to Danbury Hospital and underwent a five-hour operation to remove the growth.
Lead Surgeon Vaagn Andikyan, a gynecologic oncologist at Danbury Hospital, said: “You could expect to see a 25-pound ovarian tumor, but a 132-pound tumor is very rare.
“When I met the patient, she was extremely malnourished because the tumor was sitting in her digestive tract and she used a wheelchair due to the weight of the tumor.”
Andikyan and his team suspected that the tumor, which occupied the entire abdomen of the patient, was benign; however, they could not be sure without further testing.
“There were many problems related to this very large tumor in the abdomen,” Linus Chuang, president of obstetrics and gynecology at Western Connecticut Health Network, told CNN.
“He cannot eat, he cannot walk and there are problems related to possible complications with this large mass that compresses the venous system. She had a very high risk of developing blood clots due to the compression of the blood flow. “
It took nearly 25 clinical specialists to plan how to remove the tumor – the mass was located near a major blood vessel, so there were concerns about how the operation might affect his heart.
