The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine will deliver 170 kW.

The new Subaru BRZ has been revealed, which maintains its rear-wheel drive design but becomes a more powerful engine (no turbocharger).

As a reminder, the second-gen BRZ was re-developed alongside Toyota’s as-yet-undisclosed 86 (which is expected to change to the GR86 insignia).

While the original twins each employed a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder engine rated at 147 kW and 205 Nm, the new BRZ is upgraded to a 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder unit. equally atmospheric, with maximum powers listed of 170 kW at 7,000 r / min and 249 nm at 3700 r / min. We can expect these figures to apply to the new GR86 as well.

A six-speed manual gearbox will be shipped as standard, while an automatic transmission with the same number of gears (plus a new sport mode) will once again be optional. In both cases, a limited-slip rear differential is included.

Subaru says the new 2 + 2’s center of gravity is “even lower” than the original and “on par with exotic hypercars.” The new BRZ is around 25mm longer and almost 13mm lower than its predecessor, while the wheelbase now measures 2,575mm (around 5mm longer than before). Thanks to the use of aluminum for the roof, front fenders and hood, the Japanese firm says the BRZ has an “estimated” curb weight of “just under” 1,315 kg, while the chassis is also stiffer.

Inside, you’ll find a new seven-inch digital instrument cluster and a centrally located eight-inch touchscreen. Up front, there are “deeply contoured” bucket seats with red stitching, while the rear seats fold flat to increase luggage space.

The current Toyota GT86 lineup in South Africa comprises a single derivative, priced at R644 800. Meanwhile, the BRZ was withdrawn from the local market in September 2015.
