Last week Khayelitsha residents paralyzed the N2 during a protest over the provision of services. Three buses, a car and a truck were set on fire in Makaza, Khayelitsha.
In a statement Thursday, the Intlungu yaseMatyotyombeni Movement, which represents the shack dwellers, said they planned to close the civic center and the N2 on Friday if their demands were not met.
They are demanding adequate water, toilets and sanitation, electricity, and are demanding that the city of Cape Town suspend requests for injunctions.
“The Intlungu yaseMatyotyobeni movement has been trying to involve the city of Cape Town, for the past two weeks. All efforts and attempts to meet with the mayor have been rejected by the city of Cape Town. Now [are] reaching [the] third week, without clear answers to our demands. Instead, the city of Cape Town is responding to the media, ignoring our demands.
“Their excuses are that the places we have occupied are not for people to stay or are not suitable for services. Another excuse is that the city of Cape Town does not have a budget for the newly occupied spaces.”
