JOHANNESBURG – Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said he was extremely concerned that the latest daily number of COVID-19 infections stands at nearly 3,000 with foci of cluster outbreaks.

The cumulative number of infections now stands at 757,000 cases, and the Eastern Cape and Western Cape show an increase in the number of infections per day.

Mkhize said that at this point, health officials believed they could still contain the cluster outbreak in parts of the Eastern Cape, such as Nelson Mandela Bay Township.

“I am very concerned and I think it is important that all South Africans are very concerned. The real problem is that the numbers should go down and stabilize or stay flat at a lower level. And so one thing we did well in the beginning is probably that people take the message seriously. Right now, it seems complacency is coming. “

Mkhize said they were concerned about what they call super spreader events.

“We are concerned about what we have seen as super spreader events. In the case of the Western Cape, we have identified a number of incidents. There have been parties, particularly with students without masks and using alcohol. Those tend to explode. “

The Health Minister said the government was extremely concerned about the increase in daily coronavirus infections, but a decision had not yet been made on whether to impose restrictions during the holiday season.

Christmas is only five weeks away and the minister is concerned that there is a possibility that more people will be infected during the holiday season.

“If we are not able to contain the spread by then, you will notice that the entire area will have spread out and therefore begin to make us see stricter measures. We have not decided at this time that there will be stricter lockdown measures during Christmas, but it is a cause for concern. There is a lot of movement of people, they are not doing any work, so they interact and enjoy the parties “.
