Police arrested a man who allegedly tried to cross into South Africa with explosives.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the Beitbridge border post in the early hours of Thursday for allegedly attempting to smuggle explosives into the country.

The man was driving a truck and stopped at the border post, which connects South Africa with Zimbabwe, around 1 a.m., said police spokesman Col. Moatshe Ngoepe.

Police officers and members of the Musina Bomb Disposal Unit found 115 units of explosive cartridges and 100 units of explosive accessories in the vehicle.

“He was arrested immediately. The suspect was reportedly traveling from Zimbabwe to Alberton in Gauteng province,” Ngoepe said.

“The origin of the explosives and the motive is not known at this time, however, police investigations continue.”

The man is scheduled to appear soon in Musina Magistrates Court on charges of possession of explosive materials.
