And so the story of Liverpool continues with Pep Guardiola and Manchester City.
The news that the City boss has agreed to a new two-year contract is likely to have been welcomed by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.
The pair enjoy a respectful rivalry that has almost transcended what has come to be defined as soccer excellence in the Premier League.
The shots of 97, 98, 99 and 100 points between them over the last few years have set new standards in English football.
And that will only continue after Guardiola’s contract extension at the Etihad this week.

But the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager couldn’t resist signing two more, as his goal is to regain the Premier League trophy that Klopp’s Reds took so emphatically.
In that sense, Guardiola looks a lot like Klopp at the other end of the M62.
The German extension, drafted 11 months ago, will see you stay at Anfield until 2024, which will take up to nine years in the process.
That will eclipse the previous two seven-year seasons with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, giving him the opportunity to write more pages in his already important book of Liverpool history.
With four years remaining to run at Liverpool, it’s a tantalizing prospect for Reds fans to think about what his honor roll will look like when Klopp finally leaves.
That same sentiment will now linger on the road in East Manchester as it promises some more delicious chapters that will come between the two sides.
For the neutrals, the news gives them more time to watch two of the world’s elite coaches, in their prime, continue to face each other at the top of English football.
After finishing 18 points behind Liverpool last season, Guardiola outlined what’s next for him and his team after compromising his future at the Etihad.
“The challenge for us is to keep improving and evolving and I’m very excited to help Manchester City do that,” he said.
And whatever temperature this news gets from Liverpool’s fanbase, one thing is for sure for Klopp and his team.
Guardiola’s decision only extends this particular rivalry and shows the Reds that their closest rivals will not be leaving anytime soon.
