JOHANNESBURG – The National Tax Authority (NPA) on Thursday welcomed the Pretoria Magistrates Court’s decision to hand over to the Midstream State, Centurion, property of fugitives Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, after they failed to appear in court.

The couple are in Malawi after fleeing South Africa last week, claiming they feared for their lives.

“The NPA welcomes the court’s decision to confiscate the property from the State since the property was a security that the defendants have put in terms of their bail conditions. They have violated the conditions of their bail and therefore, as part of the process, they have to confiscate that property, ”said Sipho Ngwema, a spokesman for the NPA.

The Bushiris face fraud and money laundering charges amounting to more than 100 million rand in South Africa and will face additional charges after violating strict bail conditions.

It is understood that they intend to request bail in Malawi in connection with an extradition process initiated by South African officials.

Ngwema said they were confident in the ability of legal processes to bring the accused back to South Africa to face justice.

“They should be able to return to South Africa and face those charges in time. They can run, but they cannot hide. They are not off the hook. One day they will come to South Africa, ”he said.
