Cape Town – The Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) is working with police and Table View High School after ‘spoofed’ TikTok accounts posted the K word on videos of black students at the school.

In a statement issued Thursday, WCED said it has learned of very disturbing social media accounts containing racist comments.

The accounts have been linked to a 15-year-old from Table View High School and another to the school’s name.

“WCED has engaged the school and confirmed that the student’s account has allegedly been spoofed. The parents sent the student’s phone number to SAPS and opened a character defamation case. ”

“Arrangements are being made with a digital forensics company to remove the content,” said WCED spokesman Bronagh Hammond.

The school has instructed an attorney who is also engaging with TikTok to remove the fake account from the school.

Hammond said: “They have submitted a legal letter as well as an affidavit from the school confirming that the account was illegally registered in the name of the school.”

The videos that were posted on the TikTok account with the school’s name used racist comments about videos of black students.

In one of the videos where the black students of the school choir are singing, the video includes the caption: “From now on I will ban Zulu in the choir and replace it with Afrikaans, since Zulu is a K ** language. ** r (sic). “

Another video, showing two students telling jokes, is captioned: “Children in our school cannot tell jokes.”

Hammond said: “The content is extremely offensive and unacceptable.”

“It is troubling that ‘someone’ has allegedly masqueraded as a child’s story, and masqueraded as a school story that never existed, with the intention of maliciously sowing seeds of division, hatred and racism, and causing harm to a minor and the integrity of this school.

“It is unacceptable for people to intentionally and maliciously want to provoke racial unrest and tension.

“We will continue to collaborate with the school and SAPS. WCED has released this information to allow accurate reporting on the matter. “

Police Spokesperson FC Van Wyk said: “Please note that a criminal libel case was logged on Table View SAPS for investigation. The investigation continues ”.
