Durban – The unexpected reorganization of the KwaZulu-Natal cabinet on Tuesday has exposed a political tinderbox never seen before in the province with developments described as reflecting Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala’s mission to neutralize MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

These sentiments were voiced by some provincial ANC experts, who spoke exclusively to the Daily News following Zikalala’s decision to move Dube-Ncube from economic development, tourism and environmental issues to finance, and MEC Ravi. Pillay taking her wallet.

In announcing the reorganization, Zikalala said that “the reconfiguration will certainly revitalize and introduce effective service delivery that will position the government to focus on accelerating transformation and move us closer to realizing a united, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous KwaZuluNatal.”

However, high-ranking officials of the movement told a different story, claiming that the shakeup was aimed at simply pulling Dube-Ncube out of the province’s strategic economic department to a less important portfolio.

A senior ANC official, who supports Dube-Ncube, went so far as to say that the move was “personal.”

The individual said that Dube-Ncube understood the task of transforming the economy for the benefit of rural and municipal communities.

“If we talk about the 11.1 million people of KwaZulu-Natal, you need someone who understands the economy and rural and municipal communities,” said an activist.

Another source, who is a prominent activist and vocal ANC in the province, with intricate knowledge of the relationship between Zikalala and Dube-Ncube, said that Zikalala was determined to grapple with Dube-Ncube’s political reputation due to her ambition to become prime minister.

Zikalala spokesman Lennox Mabaso declined to respond to questions sent to him, saying they had been addressed at a press conference on Tuesday.

He told the media that the reorganization had nothing to do with politics.

He said he was sure that the change of the provincial cabinet had the support of the business and tourism sector.

Dube-Ncube spokeswoman Ndabezinhle Sibiya also declined to answer questions about the relationship between her and Zikalala.

Instead, he talked about his plans for his new portfolio.

Ravi Pillay’s office also did not comment.

The Daily News understands that in his campaign to move up the government ladder, Dube-Ncube was allegedly undermining Zikalala by running government programs that parallel those of the prime minister’s office.

Another senior official said Zikalala was said to live in fear of her political career, as she was “on the defensive in terms of politics, as both the so-called CR17 and the Radical Economic Transformation camp had become her against”.

The source added: “The government is the only card it has to regain its political powers. There is a feeling that Zikalala would not be re-elected when his term in the ANC ends in 2023 because he has broken many trusts. What he wants now is to leave a legacy ”.

Nhlakanipho Ntombela, the ANC provincial spokesperson, said that the provincial executive committee and the provincial working committee (PWC) had met earlier this month to discuss the challenges facing all departments, and then asked officials, the top five, to further discuss how to address the challenges. .

“So if the prime minister sees that it is only one department that has challenges, then it is his right,” Ntombela said.

Ntombela said he was confident that when the PWC met again in two weeks he would discuss the reorganization.

He denied knowing of Dube-Ncube’s ambition to become prime minister.

“I don’t know where this is coming from. We are still going to have regional conferences, provincial conferences and then the national conference before the prime ministers are appointed, ”he said.
