CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer has accused the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) of not being interested in resolving concerns about alleged racism at Brackenfell High School.

The party canceled a scheduled meeting with provincial education officials.

On Friday, supporters are expected to protest again outside the school.

Schäfer said the EFF only wanted to intimidate and disrupt education. This despite the fact that the party promised in court not to do so.

Schäfer said they were aware that EFF leaders were making repeated threats of violence on social media and on the radio and that police were making extensive preparations before tomorrow’s protest.

EFF supporters clashed with Brackenfell residents outside of the school when the party protested a “white only” matrix farewell event last week.

The masquerade ball was held in a private location last month.

The EFF did not respond to requests for comment on Friday’s preparations.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a protest by the Positive Action Campaign (PAC) in Brackenfell.

PAC supporters gathered in the neighborhood Wednesday to protest alleged displays of racism during a recent EFF rally outside the high school.

Police spokesman Andre Traut said officers would remain in the area until calm was restored: “Circumstances surrounding a crime are being investigated in terms of the Public Rally and Violence Act. The public in the area to maintain public order were forced to act. Then the crowd dispersed and no arrests have been made yet. “
