Rustenburg – Fraud defendants Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary spent their first night in police custody in Malawi, local media reported Wednesday.

The couple surrendered to police in Lilongwe on Wednesday, following an arrest warrant that was carried out in South Africa on Tuesday.

The couple were expected to appear in Lilongwe Magistrates Court for a bail request hearing on Wednesday afternoon, but local media reported that the hearing would be in chambers and the Bushiris would not be required to be present.

They mysteriously fled South Africa for their home country, Malawi, citing security concerns.

The couple face charges of theft, money laundering and fraud related to an investment plan.

Both were released on bail of 200,000 rand each at the Pretoria Court of First Instance on 4 November, following their arrest in October.

As part of their bail conditions, they were only allowed to travel within Gauteng and the Northwest until the case was finalized. The couple owns a hotel in Rustenburg, in the northwest.

His bond was revoked and an arrest warrant was issued.

The self-proclaimed prophet said that he strongly believes in the Malawi constitution because it protects all its citizens, including himself and his wife, that was the reason why he fled to Malawi.

“I am innocent until proven guilty. As of now, there is no court in the world that has proven me guilty. I may be subjected to the media and a public trial, but I maintain my innocence until my guilt, “he said in a statement to SADC Communities before turning himself in to the police.

On Saturday Bushiri filed five demands that he wanted South Africa to comply with before he could return for trial.

He demanded that Pretoria not revoke his bail, assured them that they would be safe and would change the team of police officers assigned to the case, prosecutor and magistrate claiming that as a black man he would not have a fair path in a case investigated and presided over. by the whites.
