Sam Cane hits back at ‘brutal’ critics after loss to Argentina

All Blacks captain Sam Cane has accused those who question his leadership after the loss to Argentina of ignoring rugby.

Cane, as well as coach Ian Foster, have come under fire following the All Blacks’ surprising 25-15 loss to Argentina in Sydney last Saturday, which followed the previous weekend’s loss to Australia.

It was the first time the All Blacks lost to Argentina in 30 test matches and condemned Foster’s team to consecutive losses for the first time since 2011.

Speaking during an interview with New Zealand Sky sportsCane said the All Blacks players share their fans’ frustrations, but added that some of the ‘brutal’ comments posted online were unhelpful.

“We have incredible fans, but we also have some pretty brutal ones,” Cane explained. “You have to remind yourself that they might like to think that they know a lot about rugby, but they really don’t.

‘If my leadership is questioned in public, the opinions that really matter to me are my teammates and the coaches I work with every day. I am very confident from them that we are on the right track. ‘

Cane also defended Foster following calls to have him replaced by Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson, who was one of the candidates to succeed Steve Hansen.

“He’s given us very clear approaches to where we need to improve, so it’s not that we’re stuck and we don’t have the answers,” Cane said. Foz is only human.

The All Blacks’ last match at the Tri-Nations is against Argentina in Newcastle on November 28.
