The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) will open and begin processing the last and final round of applications for Covid-19 Temporary Assistance Plan for Employers and Employees (Covid-19 TERS) benefits starting on Monday (November 23). ) and will close at the end of December.

This follows last week’s announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa that Covid-19 TERS benefits would be extended for one more month until October 15, 2020.

“The extension has been the subject of intense discussions with the social partners in the National Council for Economic Development and Labor (Nedlac).

“The receipt of Covid-19 TERS applications for September 16, 2020 to October 15, 2020 will close on December 31 and no further applications will be accepted beyond that date,” the FIU said.

This period covers the following categories of employees whose employers are:

  • You are not allowed to start operations under Disaster Management regulations;
  • No alternative arrangements can be made for vulnerable workers, such as working from home or taking special measures under the direction of OHS to protect them; Y
  • Unable to make use of their services due to operational requirements caused by compliance with regulations and instructions, such as classification, staggering of working hours, short time and the introduction of shift systems.

“As with previous claims processes, to apply in the new period, employers must upload similar documentation including: signed approval or acceptance letter, bank confirmation letter, proof of payment to employees and refund to the FIU. , if appropriate.

“In accordance with strict governance principles, we will still subject payments to bank verification before releasing the funds to the applicant’s accounts.

“The immediate past has taught us that even under the pandemic, criminals are at large and seek to profit through their dire means. We have an obligation to do everything in our power to ensure that funds are not entered into incorrect accounts, ”said Acting FIU Commissioner Marsha Bronkhorst.

The Covid-19 TERS Aid Plan was established to help employees who lost income due to the Coronavirus and regulations that limit economic activity during the various levels of the lockdown.

Since March 2020, just over R52 billion have been disbursed in 11.5 million payments through more than one million employers.
