JOHANNESBURG – Commuters were urged to use alternative transportation on Tuesday due to a massive taxi march across the country scheduled for Wednesday.

The National Taxi Association (NTA) said drivers will go to the office of Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula and the Presidency in Tshwane at Union Buildings to present a memorandum of demands.

Drivers said some of their grievances included the refusal of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) to be the industry’s main leadership body.

The industry said drivers had yet to receive the R1.3 billion COVID-19 relief fund for drivers.

NTA spokesman Theo Malele assured that traffic will not be interrupted.

“We are sorry for our worthy travelers. It is a pettiness that the powers that be do not listen when we speak to them. So this is the only way they will listen to our plight, ”Malele said.
