Johannesburg – Motorists were stunned Tuesday morning when they saw the body of a man hanging under a bridge on the N1 in Gauteng.
Since then, Gauteng traffic police have asked motorists to be cautious on the N1 North Freeway and avoid the area towards Polokwane after a man committed suicide around 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Traffic police said the incident occurred between the Petroport Garage and the Wallmansthal Bridge. Authorities said the circumstances of the suicide were unknown at this time. Police investigations are underway.
Seal Maremane, a spokesman for the Gauteng Traffic Police, criticized motorists for recording videos.
“The Gauteng Traffic Police condemns the reckless behavior of some motorists passing on the N1 highway, especially those taking photographs of the deceased. This behavior is not justified and is punishable by the police authorities since the family of the deceased has not yet been notified.
“Anyone who is found with the photos, or who is distributing them, will face the wrath of the law,” Maremane said.
Gauteng Police spokeswoman Captain Mavela Masondo said police received an anonymous call about the incident around 6.30am.
“The police went to the scene and called the paramedics who certified his death. The investigation continues to determine the motive, ”he said.
The Gauteng traffic police urged motorists to use alternative roads such as Sefako Makgatho Drive, Old Warmbaths and / or Bela-Bela roads.
Maremane said the scene was not yet clear and only one lane was used.
They must clean the bridge of the N1 where the man hanged himself.
Otherwise we will see flames
