The grants were intended to provide much-needed relief to the unemployed and vulnerable groups affected by poverty in society and were not to be accessible to employed persons.

JOHANNESBURG – The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Group for Forensic Services and Investigations (GFIS) has discovered that more than 1,500 subway employees fraudulently received COVID-19 special welfare assistance and other grants.

These included social, child, military and social pension subsidies.

The grants were intended to provide much-needed relief to the unemployed and vulnerable groups affected by poverty in society and were not to be accessible to employed persons.

The GFIS found that 419 workers improperly benefited from the special COVID-19 R350 social relief, while 1,129 employees fraudulently benefited from the other grants.

Joburg Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo said he had instructed city labor relations officials to initiate disciplinary proceedings against culprits who robbed the state.

“We have ordered labor relations in the city to initiate disciplinary proceedings against those affected and we have advised the GFIS to share the results of the investigations with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) to take additional measures that may include criminal prosecution, ”Makhubo said in a statement.
