Cricket South Africa (CSA) The council of members confirmed on Tuesday that it would sign on the interim board set up by sports minister Nathi Mthethwa.
A standoff that began last week ends when, through CSA interim chairman Rihan Richards, the council of members refused to recognize the interim board, which is chaired by Judge Zak Yacoob and also includes former CSA chief executive officer. Haroon Lorgat.
Lorgat’s involvement, among other things, was noted as an important issue for the council of members.
That stance by the council of members drew criticism from the minister, the South African Cricket Players Association (SACA), the interim board and the public and, after meetings over the weekend, the council of members has now agreed to hand over the power.
A statement issued by CSA said there was now “a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities for the immediate future of CSA.”
“All agreed on the way forward and collaborate, strictly in accordance with the pertinent legal framework,” the statement added.
Speaking on behalf of the interim board, Judith February added: “The interim board regards this as a positive step and looks forward to working together to achieve the desired results.”
Richards said: “In the spirit of the CSA vision, the membership council considers the commitments with the interim board as the way forward, a leap in the right direction and anticipates that cricket will be the winner as a result.”
After a meeting between the council of members and the interim board on Monday evening, it is understood that it was decided to adopt the interim board in its entirety. That means Lorgat is expected to remain on the interim board.
England, meanwhile, arrived in South Africa on Tuesday and will now begin a 10-day quarantine period before playing three T20s and three ODIs against the Proteas, in Cape Town and Paarl, between November 27 and December 9.
There were concerns that increased resistance from the council of members would jeopardize the tour as it could have forced the minister to potentially place CSA under administration.
That crisis has now been averted, it seems, and the interim board will seek to clean up an administration that has been on the rocks for more than a year.
