JOHANNESBURG – Hospitals in the Nelson Mandela Bay Township are under pressure with an increase in the number of COVID-19 infections in recent days, yet officials said more beds were being made available.
The municipality has seen an increase in cases, and the Eastern Cape province has now recorded nearly 109,000 infections.
That’s an increase of nearly 7,000 new cases in the last week alone, and most were reported in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro.
The head of the Eastern Cape Health Department, Sibongile Zungu, said: “At Livington Hospital, there are 72 beds available in the basement that was prepared for 2010 disaster management. Doctors coming from Doctors Without Borders will support and there will be doctors who will move from the quieter districts to the Nelson Mandela Bay metro ”.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize is visiting the Nelson Mandela Bay metro on Tuesday to help with the intervention plan.
