CAPE TOWN – Home Secretary Aaron Motsoaledi will explain to Members of Parliament on Tuesday morning how self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri, accused of fraud, fled the country.
Bushiri and his wife, Mary, fled the country last week while on bail of R200,000 each.
Now members of Parliament want answers from the Home Secretary and officials in his department on how this happened.

The chairman of the Internal Affairs committee, Bongani Bongo, said they had noticed Motsoaledi’s claim that the Bushiri declared permanent residence was also fraudulent.
He said the committee had highlighted countless times the need for consequence management against corrupt elements in the Department of the Interior, who compromised the security of the national population registry by fraudulently granting permits to unworthy recipients.

On claims that Bushiris may have hitchhiked with the Malawian president, Bongo said that would also need to be clarified.
Meanwhile, the National Prosecutor’s Office (NPA) said it will submit a request in terms of the Criminal Procedure Law for an arrest warrant for the fugitive couple.
