JOHANNESBURG – The Investigation Directorate of the Independent Police (Ipid) confirmed that Shepherd Bushiri’s lawyer opened an extortion case in 2018.
The case concerns police officers who allegedly tried to extort money from Bushiri.
This comes after Bushiri accused the police of extortion.

Ipid, however, says the self-proclaimed prophet has not been cooperating with authorities regarding the case.
“What I can confirm is that there is a case that was opened in 2018 by Bushiri’s lawyer. It is about alleged police corruption,” said Ndileka Cola, a spokesperson for Ipid.
“The case was opened and there has been little cooperation due to his busy schedule. This case is still waiting for him to provide more information to Ipid.”

Bushiri and his wife Mary skipped the country on Wednesday.
They were recently granted bail of 200,000 rand each after their arrest on charges of fraud and money laundering.
Meanwhile, the South African government has started a process to extradite the Bushiris after violating the conditions of their bail, as they are not allowed to travel outside of South Africa.
