“I affirm from the beginning that I have the utmost respect for Supreme Court Vice President Zondo and that I would never, frivolously or for ulterior motives, raise the issues that I raise.”
He said Zondo should have refused to chair the commission, “given our personal relationships.”
Zuma describes how he got to know Zondo when Zondo was a lawyer and how they became friends. Also, during this period, he “developed a romantic relationship” with Thobeka Madiba, whom he would later marry.
“Unbeknownst to me, and actually a pleasant surprise, Supreme Court Vice President Zondo also had some family connection to my wife. Suffice it to say, this turned our personal relationship into a cordial family relationship, ”Zuma said.
Zondo had already revealed on October 29 that the “family connection” was that he had a son with Thobeka Madiba, Zuma’s sister. Zuma said he did not intend to discuss this because it was “disrespectful.”
However, the two of us “enjoy a relatively close relationship, born out of our respective personal and professional circumstances.”
“He has visited my house on several occasions,” Zuma said of Zondo.
When Zondo was elevated to the bench, the two discussed how they would relate, deciding that they would do so “in a way that ensures that his judicial career is not adversely affected.”
