JOHANNESBURG – The Right2Know campaign on Saturday urged the SABC to look for other ways to generate income instead of losing jobs.
The public broadcaster announced earlier this week that it would go ahead with staff reductions that could affect more than 400 full-time employees in a bid to ensure the entity’s sustainability.
Some workers vowed to protest the Section 189 notices on Monday, while unions had threatened a total blackout of the station’s media platforms.
SABC CEO Madoda Mxakwe said they had exhausted all possibilities and that downsizing was the only way to save the broadcaster.
However, Dale McKinley of the Right2Know Campaign said workers were bearing the brunt of a financially poorly managed entity.
“What could have prevented this, and we have argued, is adequate public funding, a board of governors, and non-political interference. What really brought SABC to its knees was hiring all kinds of people who probably didn’t need to be in certain jobs … and now what we’re seeing are the general consequences of that, “he said.
